Our first Community workshop was a tremendous success, nearly maxing out our Zoom account with the number of people who pre-registered to attend. On Saturday, June 17, women from around the country (and possibly even a few men) gathered around their computer screens to learn about “Having Hard Conversations” from Delois Smith, LPC, NCC, one of our featured speakers from the 2023 Women Walking with God Conference. Delois’ “Competent Counselors” personal ministry work is the continuing fulfillment of a promise made to God to serve His people with her skills. She has developed a number of courses designed to help us “competently counsel” through the hard conversations of life. Because, as Romans 15:14 says, we are “full of goodness, filled with knowledge and competent to instruct one another.” With the help of these fantastic courses Delois has developed, we can feel even more confident in fulfilling that verse.
As we transitioned into the second half of our time with Delois, she switched gears toward providing some “tools for our toolbox” to help us be better prepared to know when and how to have difficult conversations with others. You’ve heard the old adage: “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it…,” which is a very true statement. Delois shared how we can utilize both spoken and unspoken means of communication to engage with others more effectively. The statistics she shared were fascinating! What was extra special about learning from Delois was that every part was focused on how to handle hard conversations from a Godly perspective, showing the compassion of Christ while staying true to the truth of the Bible. She shared many valuable scriptures which will inspire attendees as they navigate challenging situations in the future.
